Celebrity RCPD
Though a fairly rare disorder, retrograde cricopharyngeus dysfunction (R-CPD) has impacted a number of high-profile individuals over the years. Their stories help give a face to the challenges of this chronic swallowing condition.
President George H.W. Bush suffered from dysphagia for many years, often choking on foods and pills. He was eventually diagnosed with R-CPD after leaving office. His doctors performed a surgical cricopharyngeal myotomy when other treatments failed to adequately improve his swallowing. At age 88, the procedure allowed Bush to enjoy eating again.
Renowned neurologist Oliver Sacks wrote in his memoir about struggling with R-CPD following radiation therapy for cancer. The tightening of his cricopharyngeus muscle left him unable to swallow solid food and caused alarming choking fits. As a doctor himself, he understood the gravity of his situation until laser treatment brought him relief.
Comedian and talk show host Jay Leno revealed he had surgery to treat laryngopharyngeal reflux which likely stemmed from undiagnosed R-CPD. He admitted it allowed him to eat normally again after years of discomfort. Other celebrities like Joan Rivers and Cher have also alluded to similar swallowing issues.
Finally, pop singer Meghan Trainor had her breakthrough moment in 2014 with the hit "All About That Bass." But she confessed she almost quit music because of severe reflux and choking issues related to R-CPD that plagued her for years as a rising artist. Proper diagnosis and treatment enabled her to continue her successful career.
The stories of these stars help generate awareness and empathy for R-CPD. Their influence has brought greater attention to the need for research and access to expert care. Their openness reminds other sufferers they are not alone in dealing with a life-altering but very treatable disorder.
